Fitzgerald Named Warriors’ Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week

Junior Corinne Fitzgerald has been named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after qualifying for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships last weekend at Slippery Rock.

Fitzgerald (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) placed fifth in the Atlantic Region to claim the region’s final individual spot to the NCAA Championships, which will be held Saturday, November 19 in Spokane, Washington.

Her time of 22:07 was two seconds ahead of Elicia Anderson of Millersville and eight seconds faster than her time of 22:14.8 that she ran a month earlier to finish as the runner-up at the Slippery Rock Invitational.

Fitzgerald, a Capital One Academic All-District selection last year, will be making her second trip to a national championship. She ran in the 3000m steeplechase at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and was a provisional qualifier in the 5000m during the indoor season as a sophomore.

She was sixth in the PSAC Championships at Lock Haven to earn her second straight all-conference honor. She was 56th in the conference as a freshman, 20th as a sophomore and sixth this year. In the NCAA Atlantic Regional, she has moved from 40th to 23rd to fifth.
