Unbeknownst to most, the East Stroudsburg University Chemistry Club is a registered chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Each year, the club submits a summary of what they have accomplished during the academic year to the ACS Undergraduate Program to be judged for the ACS Undergraduate Chapter Awards.

There are approximately 400 undergraduate chapters that receive awards every year. Forty groups receive an Outstanding Chapter Award, 80 receive a Commendable Chapter Award, 120 receive Honorable Mentions and 160 receive Certificates of Achievement.

The ESU Chemistry Club received a Commendable Chapter Award for the efforts of those who participated in the club during 2011-2012 academic year. During this period, Luisa Londono was president, Heidi Weller was secretary, and Scott Smith was the demonstration coordinator.

The Chemistry Club was commended for their demonstrations for the Boy Scouts and Brownies, as well as for their general effort in getting students at ESU involved in chemistry. The Chemistry Club was recognized for their means of outreach to the college community: a semi-annual BBQ in front of the Science and Technology Center, the National Chemistry Week social and Mole Day celebration.

The club also participated in many of the meetings and other functions held by local professional chapters of the ACS.

In order to continue making the ESU Chemistry Club a successful student chapter of ACS, the members have planned more scout troop demonstrations and bake sales.

Thanks to ESU student Steve Buffardi, the Chemistry Club is now offering free Chemistry Help Sessions for anyone who needs help with their general or organic chemistry classes. Come to Sci-Tech room 146 between 3 PM and 5 PM on Thursdays for help from some of our brightest chemistry majors.

The Chemistry Club is also looking for help with chemistry demonstrations for the local scout troops, as well as new members for the club.
