On Tuesday, October 2, 2012, students woke up to a series of chalk drawings on the ground outside of the Keystone Room. Though the drawings were whimsical, inspirational and uplifting, they seemed to convey the same message: The arts are an important part of education that do not deserve to be cut.

The drawings featured famous quotes like, “The opposite of war isn’t peace. It’s creation,” taken from the play Rent, and more general ones, such as “You’re beautiful,” and, “Art is everywhere.”

There were also playful drawings like a Pokéball, an infinity symbol containing the word love and an outline of Pennsylvania with the words “Welcome to the Burg. Nobody does it better. Home of the Warriors.”

On a more serious note, one picture was of a large man with a red face, gesticulating angrily with a piece of chalk in his hand. This could potentially symbolize the fact that even if art is marginalized in the education system, its value will never diminish in our hearts.

Though this was meant to be an anonymous protest, the ESU Art Association is a likely culprit. The pictures are on their Facebook page and the timing coincides with upcoming events like the twelve-hour Comic-Thon on October 13 and the Zombie Walk to benefit Habitat for Humanity on October 26.

Unfortunately, the art was washed away by rain before noon, allowing few people to notice it. However, the message remains that students will not stand to have their passions quantified with dollar signs and their futures decided on a whim.

The Art Association meets on Thursdays at 2 PM in Fine Arts 103.
