The tennis team started their fall season off with a win last Thursday night in Caldwell, New Jersey.

They began by sweeping all three doubles matches.  At first doubles, senior Annie Vega and junior Allison Bean took down Sara Riccardi and Emily Slater, 8-3.

Their high spirits and aggressive play set the tone for the rest of the match. The second doubles team of Taylor Presby and Amina Dickson, both juniors, fought hard for an 8-6 win over Gwynne Alden and Nicole Caneo.

The third doubles team, consisting of freshmen Brianne Wood and Amber Jadus, followed in suit with yet another victory.

Once they overcame their nerves, they cinched the final win in doubles at 8-3 over Gabriella Rosko and Koumudi Thirunagaru.

ESU’s third to sixth singles players all won their matches to confirm the victory. Dickson played a tough opponent at first singles, and Slater was victorious with a final score of 6-0 6-0.

At second singles, Bean went into the second set with vigor and determination, but Caldwell’s Alden showed just as much will to succeed, pulling ahead in the end with a 6-0 6-4 finish.

Jadus trumped Riccardi 6-2 6-3 at third singles. Vega effortlessly nabbed another win to take her singles match against Caneo 6-0 6-1.

Wood’s play was shortened due to a retreating sun, but she still ended victoriously with an 8-3 win over Thirunagaru at fifth singles. Presby sailed through her singles match to defeat Rosko 6-0 6-0.

The Warriors are currently going into their season with a winning record of 1-0.  ESU’s current line-up is still under construction.

Coach Al McCormick will be using the fall matches to solidify the players’ positions for the spring season.

Once he finds a place for the three new freshmen (Wood, Jadus, and Elizabeth Simmons), the team hopes to surpass last year’s record of 5-12. They will be playing again at Bloomsburg’s Invitational on September 28 and 29.
