Professor at Marywood University, Dr.Lloyd Lyter, brought the Masters of Social Work (MSW) program to East Stroudsburg University at the beginning of this semester. The degree earned by the MSW program is a Marywood Degree offered at ESU.
The MSW program is offered on a part-time basis on Saturdays at ESU. A small first year class of six students was accepted for this fall semester.
As a part of the program’s growth process, Lyter will be hosting drop-in sessions one evening per month, in Stroud Hall 310 E. A drop in session will be held on November 14, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
“Students will be able to just drop in and get information about the program,” said Lyter.
The MSW degree is not limited to students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. The program has accepted students in majors such as Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Psychology.
The program lasts three years for students that do not have a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, and two years for students that do. “Students go essentially every Saturday for three years, including the summer,” said Lyter.
Second and third year students will get the experience of working in a practicum placement, under social worker supervision.
“This is for people from any major who just think this is what they would like to do,” said Lyter. Ten slots are guaranteed every year to ESU graduates who do not have a social work degree, and five slots are guaranteed to students who do have a social work degree.
The MSW program has been a part of Marywood University since 1969. It has graduated over 4,000 students through Marywood. According to Lyter, the University implemented the movement of the MSW program to different locations in order to make it more accessible for students. The program is also offered at Bloomsburg University.
The application process can be completed online on the Maywood University website. It is a standard application process that requires a resume, written statement, and transcript.
