ESU held its ninth annual university author’s book reception from 4 PM to 6 PM on November 12.

Held for the first time in the Kemp Library, President Welsh honored four ESU faculty members for their authorship: Jane E. Huffman, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences, Heon Kim, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Maureen McLaughlin, Ed.D., Professor of Reading, and Fred Misurella, Ph.D., Professor of English.

After a welcome from the Dean of the Library, Dr. Owusu-Ansah, and opening remarks from Provost, Dr. Reidhead, President Welsh presented the honorees.

“Publishing demonstrates your commitment to education and your desire to share your expertise with a larger audience,” said Welsh to the honorees.

Dr. Misurella, the author of his new book “Only Sons,” tells the story of two Italian-American families, the Salvaggis and the Maresciallos, who live in northeastern Pennsylvania. It recounts tales about the families’ transition from Italy to America, and shows how the two families become connected through their love, culture, and ambitions.

When commenting on the most difficult aspect of writing his novel, Misurella said, “You have to make characters that are real on the page, and incidents that are real on the page, so that’s always the hardest part.”

Dr. McLaughlin’s book, “Guided Comprehension for English Learners” reveals new and innovative ways to teach the English language.  It also features twelve teaching lessons, teacher commentaries, and websites designed to help teachers.

In the preface McLaughlin’s book, she states, “My goal in writing this volume has been to integrate what we know about teaching English learners with what we know about students how to comprehend.”

The book aims to explain how to use the Guided Comprehension Model to teach students the English language.

Dr. Kim, co-editor of “Making Peace In and With the World: The Gülen Movement and Eco-Justice”, remarked on the publishing process.

Before editing the book, Dr. Kim had presented it at an international conference at Holy Family University, and after the conference he started speaking with publishers.

According to Kim, he chose the best one, Cambridge Scholars Publishing.

“I sent them this volume, and it took a year for me to complete my edition. I had to change every single piece,” stated Dr. Kim.

His book focuses on the study of Islamic thought on peace and justice between the earth and humanity.

Dr. Huffman’s book, “Wildlife Forensics: Methods and Applications,” contains many case studies that reveal current applications of forensics to wildlife.

Regarding the process of writing her book, Dr. Huffman commented, “The hardest part was the editing, to make sure that everything conformed to the publisher’s requirements.”

She also indicated that an important aspect of writing the book was getting the right mix of individuals to contribute to it.

In thanking the faculty authors for their contribution to ESU and to the community, Dr. Reidhead remarked that, “Representing ESU with the best of the scholarship that you have to offer is a real testament to all of the good that we have at ESU, and that we will continue to have.”
