Living in New York, Maria and Daniel Bickart never enjoyed coffee at a Starbucks. Daniel declared, “there was always a cooler café around the corner.”

After moving back to his hometown of Stroudsburg, PA, Daniel found himself sitting in a Starbucks contemplating, “what is next for him and his new family?”

There and then it dawned on this Temple graduate, “Stroudsburg is missing a third space,” Daniel thought.

The “third space” theory is the foundation of community life that fosters creative interactions between community members.

A brief overview of the theory goes like this—your first space is your home including everyone you share it with, your second space is the workplace and your fellow employees, and the third space is vital to community life.

In this third space, the two environments of home and work are separated.

This is the space where you feel a sense that you belong to your community.

Together Maria and Daniel as a duet created a “third space” for the Stroudsburg community.

Located at 35 N. 7th Street, Café Duet is right in the heart of town just off Main St. on historic Courthouse Square.

Entering Café Duet, you immediately realize you are not in a “cookie cutter” franchised coffee shop.

This café has character.

Owner Daniel Bickart knew customers by name and how they preferred their afternoon pick me up.

“I believe this is the best coffee out there,” said Daniel.

“If someone knows of anything better, please come see  and talk to me about it.”

Aside from the variety of hot and cold beverages, Café Duet serves homemade pastries and offers one soup and salad options du joure.

Asking Daniel why he chose the name Café Duet he said, “I love music,” as Otis Redding’s “Tell the Truth” plays in the background. “And my wife and I work together as a duet. Naming our café ‘Courthouse Coffee’  was not the atmosphere we were trying to achieve, although many of our guests come over from the courthouse.”

Café Duet is warm and welcoming, a perfect place for a first date or even to sit alone and enjoy your own company.
