Regan’s Remedies: February 13, 2014

BY REGAN HOERL

Dear Regan,

I spent all of last weekend watching Netflix instead of doing my class work.  I know it’s only going to get harder as the semester goes on.  How do I get motivated and stay that way?

Sincerely,

Suffering from Senoritis

Dear Suffering from Senoritis,

The problem with senioritis is that everyone has it.

Instead of reading the novel for class or working on a project due for next week, you’re lying in bed watching a new show on Netflix.

So, when you ask your friends to keep you motivated on your schoolwork, they may not always pull through on their word.

Your friends may be suffering from this slump as well, causing complete and utter distraction from classes and homework.

One thing to keep in mind is the amount of money you’ve spent on school.

Tuition at ESU is, on average, $750 for one three-credit class.

Not completing your work or missing classes wastes your money.

You wouldn’t invest your money in a new car and not change the oil, right?

If you remember that eventually you will have to pay back that substantial amount of money you’ve loaned, then working your hardest to earn good grades makes the hard work worth your time and effort.

Lastly, and probably my biggest piece of advice, is to take pride in your work.

Now you are working at the highest level in college.

Remember when you first took your intro to your major class?

How have you grown as a student in that time?

When you do your work this year, realize that all the hard work you put into your major and general education classes made you who you are today.

If you stay involved with your major—like clubs, organizations, or Greek life—you are more likely to have a well-rounded resume and awesome grades to prove you really kept focus.

Senioritis will happen to just about everyone.

If you aren’t aware of the condition, prepare yourself, because it’s more than likely it will happen to you.

Just make sure you keep focus. Graduation is right around the corner, and senioritis isn’t an acceptable excuse in the real world.
