On Wednesday, March 12, the National Residence Hall Honorary hosted Shake It 4 A Cause.

Shake It 4 A Cause was an hour-long Zumba event held in the Keystone Room. Participants were charged a $1 entry fee and all proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

The National Residence Hall Honorary is an honorary that recognizes students, who live in residence halls at East Stroudsburg University, which have displayed service and leadership toward the progression of the residence halls.

A member of the National Residence Hall Honorary and senior at ESU stated, “The event was so much fun and for a good cause.  Everyone seemed to be having a good time following the instructor and doing their own Zumba moves.”

The instructor leading the Zumba event was ESU sophomore and Group Fitness Instructor, Tiffany DiMatteo.

The National Residence Hall Honorary raised $100 for the American Cancer Society, via Relay For Life.

Relay For Life is a fundraising walk that takes place overnight, where teams camp out around a track in the community.

There is food, fundraising, and activities throughout the entire time of the event.  Some of the key activities that occur are the Survivors Lap, Luminaria Ceremony, and Fight Back Ceremony.

The fundraiser started in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington with Dr. Gordy Klatt, who raised $27,000 for cancer by walking and running around a track for 24 hours.  When he did the 24 hour event the next year over 300 people joined him.

Since then, Relay For Life has raised almost $5 billion.  All proceeds of the Relay For Life events go to the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society, which was founded in 1913, is a national, volunteer based organization that is dedicated to ending cancer.  For over 100 years the American Cancer Society has helped to provide a world that has more birthdays and less cancer.

ESU Colleges Against Cancer club is organizing a Relay For Life event at ESU.  It will take place in Koehler Fieldhouse and the relay will begin on Friday, April 4 at 7 PM and end on Saturday, April 5 at 7 AM.
