Conquering Concentration with Confidence

Being an Active Learner Among New Collegiate Experiences (B.A.L.A.N.C.E.) Workshops are held every Thursday at 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM in Beers Lecture Hall and are open to the entire campus.

There are always two different workshops. The focus of these workshops varies from time management to roommate issues.

The workshop last Thursday was titled Concentration.

Martin Lacayo, a success coach from ESU, gave the presentation. He started the workshop by telling each student to look to the left and state the reason for being unable to concentrate.

He then spoke on the factors that cause concentration loss. Some of those factors are social media, laziness, cell phones, and lack of sleep. These were all factors that students mentioned as major contributors to why they could not concentrate.

“The library has just the right amount of everything to keep you awake and focused, especially if silence is required.”

– Martin Lacayo

Lacayo transitioned to the ability to remain focused without distractions.

He further broke down this topic by discussing types of distractions: internal and external. He said that one’s ego can stint one more than one may think.

Where one can best focus on studying was also discussed. Lacayo stated, “The library has just the right amount of everything to keep you awake and focused, especially if silence is required.”

He continued, “If you like music, play it. But not the kind that causes you to move around. Something mellower helps focus.”

The presenter reminded everyone who attended the presentation that every student is different. The tips given were meant to build a foundation to good concentration habits. Not all of these habits will work for everyone.
