Prospective graduate students should mark their calendars for September 23.

Daria Wielebinski, the director of the Career Development Center, and Kerri Quick, a Kaplan representative, will be presenting a workshop titled “Getting In: Planning for Graduate School” at 3:00 PM in Stroud 113.

At the workshop, students will learn vital information about the future job market and the application process.

For example, students will be informed about the number of projected new jobs available as well as which fields are projected for the most growth and offer the highest potential pay.

In addition, by becoming better informed of each step in the application process, students can develop the strongest application possible.

Most graduate programs require a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and doctoral programs are even more demanding. If a prospective student is set on pursuing a graduate education yet does not meet these requirements, there is still hope, and that is all the more reason to attend this workshop.

It will offer the appropriate information on how to possibly increase one’s GPA and mitigate a comparatively low GPA’s effect on admission through other parts of one’s application.

Good letters of recommendations, for example, can really make one’s application shine, and they show aspects of a given candidate that one’s GPA cannot. That being said, they can also make a good GPA look better, for one’s achievements become real and personal. Developing meaningful relationships with professors will prove critical to one’s admission.

However, an admission essay is just as — if not more so — important. Since students have complete control over this part of their application, making it the best possible is paramount.

This workshop will offer comprehensive advice on how to write a winning essay, and the Career Development Center is more than happy to help prospective graduate students with their Statement of Purpose.

According to Dr. Geiser-Getz, everyone in the Career Development Center “tries to do whatever they can to make these options [graduate school, testing resources, and these workshops] available to all students and the office can offer help with their essays.”

Finally, the workshop will conclude with a comprehensive overview of the various graduate admission exams, including the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT. Additionally, Quick will provide attendees a link to a free practice test where they can get immediate results so that they can adequately prepare for the real tests. Interested students can register for this event at http://warriorcareers.esu.edu.

Attending five of the Success Series workshops enters one for a chance to win a Brooks Brothers gift certificate.

There will also be a graduate school and career expo on October 28 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM where several graduate schools will send representatives to speak with prospective students.
