It’s fall semester again at ESU and that means another semester for WESS Radio (90.3 FM).

After winning the prestigious Woodie Award last semester, the pressure is on to keep DJs spinning and the beats blasting.

After winning the Woodie Award, there is still an air of excitement and honor at the station. We took an insider’s look into the station with Bill Cameron, better known as DJ $ Bill.

“Our members invest a significant amount of effort into our station every semester. It is immensely satisfying to see that work recognized by a national competition,” said Cameron.

But will they do it again this year? “I can’t speak for the station,” said DJ $ Bill, “but it is my personal opinion that our recent success has created some high expectations. I do think it’s fair to say that we all look forward to the opportunity to prove ourselves again.”

This fall will be Cameron’s second semester working at WESS as DJ $ Bill. “I thoroughly enjoy the creative freedom, but the networking potential is probably my favorite aspect,” he said.

Each DJ at the station has his or her own timeframe and schedule to keep, and that is no different for DJ $ Bill.

Cameron said, “I DJ a weekly radio show, ‘Loud in Stroud,’ on Tuesday nights at 9:00 PM. My show focuses on showcasing local and independent artists, as well as popular artists from alternative and heavy genres.”

There is a multitude of different radio stations across the country, but according to Cameron, ours is different.

“Our open format is a really important factor in what sets WESS apart. I cannot overemphasize how personal it allows each show to be. Also, the inviting atmosphere tends to create a more comfortable environment for our station to operate,” said Cameron.

DJ $ Bill explained that WESS has a variety of great shows throughout the week.

“I’ve had the opportunity to sit in for a couple broadcasts of ‘The Motherload,’ and they have all been thoroughly enjoyable,” he said.

Upon graduation, DJ $ Bill intends to seek employment in media but is unsure of exactly what field.

“My hope,” he said, “is to continue gaining real world experience during my time at ESU to facilitate this pursuit.”

WESS is a family of dedicated friends, and provides firsthand experience for its staff.

“It is all made possible by the efforts of students, faculty, and local community members just like you. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of this station and would encourage anyone interested in music, popular media, or communication to consider becoming involved as well,” said Cameron.

Remember to tune in for Loud in Stroud Tuesday nights at 9:00 PM. The WESS staff appreciates the continued support of the campus community and as DJ $ Bill reminds us, “We love it when you turn us on.”
