Nominations are being accepted for the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards. They will be presented at the eighteenth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast, which is scheduled for January 19 at the Mattioli Recreation Center.

Former President Robert Dillman, as well as co-hosts Leslie Antonette and Mel Gillespie, initiated the Celebration Breakfast in 1998 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. It is one of the few programs in the area commemorating him, and over 200 people from the community attend this annual event.

Three awards will be presented at the event. One will go to a member of the ESU community, a second award will go to an ESU student, and the third award will go to a member of the regional community.

ESU community candidates must be currently employed by the university as a faculty member, staff member, or administrator.

Student candidates must be currently enrolled for at least two full-time semesters with a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

Candidates from the community must be actively involved in Monroe County and be working to improve the community in ways such as advocating for education, helping children, working with underprivileged and underrepresented youth groups, etcetera.

Nominees for the awards should exemplify characteristics of Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violence, equality, justice, cultural diversity, and respect for humanity.

All nominations must include a short biography of the candidate and one letter of recommendation.

Nomination forms are available online at www.esu.edu/mlk, or by visiting ESU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs on Normal Street or ESU’s Office of Diversity & Equal Opportunity in the Reibman Administration Building, Room 115.

In addition to the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards, the program will include the Julianna V. Bolt Art Contest. Students from Monroe County’s high schools will submit their art, and all entries will be displayed during the event.

The Celebration Breakfast will also showcase a speaker, and there will be musical performances.

Tickets for the eighteenth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast will soon be available. They cost $35 per person, $12 per student, and $250 for a table of eight — which must be paid in full.
