ESU Field Hockey Continues to Win

Coming off a 6-1 win over Mansfield, the ESU women’s field hockey team was looking to get their 7th win.

The Warriors women’s field hockey team, ranked no.7 in the country, was facing Mercyhurst on Saturday October 18 at Whitenight Field.

The first half had plenty of shots, and both teams were getting chances. However, no team executed and was able to score.

The Warriors, who came into the game at 6-5, outshot the Lakers 7-4 in the first period.

Coming out in the second period, the Warriors and Lakers were both looking to score and take an advantage in the game.

Junior forward Ally Roth scored the first goal of the game to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead over the Lakers.

Roth’s first goal was assisted by senior midfielder Becky Gagliardi, coming 6:11 into the second half. Roth’s first goal came from the top of the circle and was off a penalty corner.

Mercyhurst forced overtime with a goal by Blair Pemberton with 1:33 remaining in the game. Pemberton’s goal came off a shot from the left side that was deflected into the goal.

When the time ran out in regulation the Warriors and Lakers were both still knotted up at 1 goal apiece. Ally Roth scored her second goal of the game in overtime to win it for the Warriors.

The goal was assisted by senior midfielder Gabrielle Seibert and was knocked in on the right side of the cage. Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Ard made four saves for the Warriors.

The Warriors outshot the Lakers 19-8 during this PSAC matchup on Saturday. The Warriors had 14 shots on goal while the Lakers had 6 shots on goal. The Warriors had 5 corners while the Lakers had 11 corners.

Following the overtime win over Mercyhurst, the seventh ranked Warriors took to the field on Sunday against Dowling.

ESU, who had a commanding 32-0 advantage in shots, shut out the Golden Lions 2-0 on the strength of goals from senior midfielder Becky Gagliardi and senior forward Jessica Lawville.

With their fourth straight win, the Warriors improved to 8-5. They are currently in fourth in the PSAC Conference behind 10-2 (7-2) Shippensburg, 10-2 (7-1) West Chester, and 11-1 (8-1) Millersville.

Junior forward Ally Roth, who has started all 13 games this season, leads the PSAC with 40 points and 17 goals, and senior forward Jessica Lawville is fourth in points with 40 and is tied for third in goals with 11.

Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Ard has an 8-4 record in 12 games played and has a goals against average of 2.54.

No. 7 ranked ESU will return to Whitenight Field to faceoff against Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM.
