ESU Presents: “Eurydice”

ESU Arts is at it again presenting their student-performed play, Eurydice!

The play will open on Tuesday, February 24.

Eurydice tells the story of a young woman named Eurydice, played by junior English major Katie Reardon from Rockaway, NJ, who falls to her death on her wedding day.

She is reunited with her father, played by Andrew Scoggin, a freshman Theatre major from Ottsman, PA, in the underworld. She must decide whether to return to Earth to be with Orpheus, her lover, played by Jamil Joseph, a junior Theatre major from Bushkill, PA, or remain in Hades with her father.

Eurydice, written in 2003 by Sara Ruhl, a MacArthur Fellowship winner, tells the original story of Orpheus from his wife’s point of view.

In Ruhl’s version, she made several changes, including the creation of the character of Eurydice’s father.

Play Director and Professor of Theatre Susan O’Hearn chose this play because of the emotions that are triggered through the scenes and the ability of viewers to relate to the characters and story line.

Along with the characters played by Reardon, Scoggin, and Jamil, additional characters include Loud Stone, played by junior Rebecca Roeber, a Theatre major from East Stroudsburg; Big Stone, played by Luis Feliciano, a sophomore Theatre major from Philadelphia; and Little Stone, played by freshman Theatre major Auyana Rosario from Hershey.

Associate Professor of Theatre, Yoshinori Tanokura, created the sets and costume designs, and guest designer, Aaron Porter, focused on the lighting.

Showings will be held February 24 to 28 at 8 PM and March 1 at 2 PM.

All showings will be held at Smith-McFarland Theatre of the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Center on Normal and Marguerite streets in East Stroudsburg.
