On a rainy Saturday, March 14, ESU’s lacrosse team beat the Mercy College Mavericks 14-9 in a non-conference game to run their record to a perfect 3-0 on a wet Whitenight Field.

The Warriors were led by junior attack Lauren Nunes, who had a career-high 7 points with 4 goals and 3 assists.

Junior attack and math education major Kaitlynn Wiltraut celebrated Pi Day with a hat trick of her own and 1 assist. Both Nunes and Wiltraut have recorded hat tricks in each of ESU’s first three games.

Freshman midfielder Chessie Rahmer added two goals for the Warriors.

The game was knotted at 1-1 when ESU went on a 7-2 scoring run. The Warriors led 9-4 at halftime.

ESU’s Nunes would find the back of the net on an unassisted goal to give the Warriors its largest lead at 10-4. Then, the Mavericks struck back.

Mercy scored 4 straight goals to make it 10-8, but ESU’s Wiltraut scored the next 2 goals to pad ESU’s lead, 12-8.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper, Jessica Maxwell, recorded 10 saves for the Warriors.

Mercy junior attack Nicole Augustine and scored 5 goals in defeat.

The Warriors outshot the Mavericks 14-9. ESU also had a 16-9 edge in draw controls.

Earlier in the week, ESU beat Wilmington (DE) 14-10 and Chestnut Hill 17-3.

Wiltraut said, “I’m excited to start the season 3-0. We got better as the week progressed, but I know that the PSAC is harder competition.”

Wiltraut sounded cautiously optimistic when she said, “We are better than last year’s team. We’re more cohesive. But we will take it one step at a time.”

On Tuesday, March 17, Lauren Nunes was named the PSAC Lacrosse Co-Athlete of the Week. The Phillipsburg, N.J. native has strung together 12 goals and 7 assists over 3 games. Nunes is third in the PSAC averaging 4 goals per game and 6.33 points per game.

Currently, ESU is scheduled to play Kutztown on the road on Saturday, March 21. It will be the first conference game for the Warriors.
