East Stroudsburg University’s Tutorial Program has a new face, and is looking for help!

As of Sept. 1 of this semester, Dr. Fernando Perez has taken over the head position at the Learning Center in Rosenkrans East.

Dr. Perez was previously the director of Student Support Services, which brought in between $200-230,000 a year to provide services to first generation and low-income background students.

“This is a new position for me. It’s not my area but I’m getting an understanding of how the program works. Hopefully we can get a group of faculty involved to help with the hiring process,” said Dr. Perez.

The Tutorial Program provides free tutoring on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is offered to all ESU undergraduate students, it is for specific 100- and 200-level courses and some upper-level courses.

All of the tutors are qualified and trained undergraduate and graduate peers tutors, and they assist students individually, or in a small or large group environment.

Although the fall 2015 semester just started and everyone is getting adjusted to their new schedules, the Tutorial Program is looking for some more student tutors!

If you want to become a tutor, apply online at esu.edu/academicenrichment and click on “Tutoring Program” and “Application to Be a Tutor.”

You must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, a B or higher in the subject you wish to tutor, and be recommended by a professor.

If you have any questions, call the center at 570-422-3433, or just stop by Rosenkrans Hall!

If you are a student in need of a tutor, apply online at the link I provided above, and just click on “Application to Get a Tutor.”

You will need to know the course name, course number, CRN and name of your professor. You must also provide the last six digits of your ESU Student ID number as well as a local address, preferred email and cell or local home phone number.

ESU’s Guru Program is a different ball game.

The Guru Program allows student helpers to provide support and assistance for large class section.

Class sections with 60 to 119 students are eligible for one Guru. Classes with more than 120 students are eligible for two Gurus.

Some of the responsibilities a Guru has includes: attending all classes, support the professor in managing the large classroom by verifying class rosters and taking attendance, arranging for technology services, assisting with maintaining and uploading course materials and information onto D2L, and more.

Attention faculty, are you looking for support and assistance with your class sections? All you need to do is recommend a student you feel would make a great Guru, and make sure they apply.
To be hired, the requested department will interview the student, make the decision to hire him or her, and refer the student to the Department of Academic Enrichment and Learning (DAEL).

DAEL will then meet with the student to explain the Guru position requirements and responsibilities.

Some position specifics include: working 10 hours per week, required initial training via online seminars, and an orientation.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor or a Guru, apply!

The Learning Center really needs some help, and the students will too! As for faculty, if you know of a student that would be a good fit for either job, please talk to them and recommend them!
