The ESU women’s soccer team lost to the Mercyhurst Lakers with a score of 2-0 this past Sunday, at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The game made ESU’s first loss at home since last September’s season opener, when they lost to Kutztown 1-0.

The game remained scoreless throughout the first half. Both of the goals scored in the game came during the middle of the second half.

Mercyhurst’s first goal came from a free kick by senior midfielder Allie Cornacchia. The next goal came only two minutes later from junior forward Carly Zimmerman.

The two scores were the only shots on goal from Mercyhurst. Making her first start in goal this season, Mercyhurst senior goalkeeper Ellie McDougall made two saves to preserve the win for the Lakers.

The final score belies the fact that ESU dominated the game offensively.

Despite outshooting Mercyhurst 12-3 and holding a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks, ESU could not seem to find the back of the net in this game.

Mercyhurst ranked thirteenth in the PSAC preseason poll, while ESU ranked second.

The loss dropped the Warrior’s record to 4-2 this season. They now place third in the PSAC, tied with West Chester University.

Gannon University holds the number one spot and remains undefeated with five wins.

In the number two spot is California University.

ESU’s next game will be away at Clarion University on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The team will then have almost a week’s rest before travelling to face the California University Vulcans, who currently rank second in the PSAC at 4-1-1.
