On Oct. 9, the Northern Arizona University (NAU) chapter of Delta Chi had their lives changed forever.

There was a shooting at the NAU Delta Chi house, which left one dead and three badly wounded.

In times of growing tension and instability, one thing became very clear to the members of Delta Chi: We MUST come together for peace.

The shooting impacted all Delta Chi chapters, as many tweeted condolences and some sent care packages to the NAU chapter.

Our local Delta Chi chapter here at East Stroudsburg University decided to take action.

On Nov. 5 and 6, Delta Chi set up a table in the lobby of Dansbury Commons.

From 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. the brothers traded shifts asking for donations. The donations went towards raising gun violence awareness.

“I knew we had to do something. Even though you never meet some of the guys at these other chapters, they’re still our brothers. It really hurt us,” explained Kyle Scott, Delta Chi’s philanthropy chair.

Luke Garner, the president of ESU’s Delta Chi chapter found himself mourning as well.

“I couldn’t believe it when I read the news. You hear news like this all the time, but it doesn’t hit close to home like this. We need to educate people, because these types of things can happen to anyone. It’s not just another news story.”

The Delta Chi brothers will continue to raise money for gun violence awareness, as well as for the NAU chapter.

Usually, the brothers raise money for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, but they plan to hold a dual event sometime next semester for both.

Seth Kardon, Delta Chi’s Vice President believes that both of these issues are important to cover.

“Obviously a lot of people are impacted by cancer. Delta Chi and The V Foundation go hand in hand, but this gun violence issue is scary. Holding a big event for both would be awesome. We’re planning on something big.”

The brothers remain optimistic and plan to raise over about $30 per brother in philanthropy.

The issue expands beyond just the small chapter here at East Stroudsburg.

“I’m graduating this semester, but I want to keep helping. It’s a lifetime brotherhood,” explained Scott.

All Delta Chis share this sentiment. Over $12,000 has been raised for the NAU chapter, and the number grows every day.

Hopefully, we can all find peace.
