February brings the start of African American History month across the U.S. East Stroudsburg University celebrates African American Heritage with a number of events that occur through the month.

The ESU Insider states that the events will focus on cultural awareness and African American Heritage.

The African American Heritage events kicked off on Tuesday with a bake sale presented by Voices of Triumph, ESU’s student gospel choir.

Black Jeopardy also was also held on Tuesday. The purpose of Black Jeopardy was to raise awareness about stereotypes African Americans deal with daily through skits.

Yesterday, ESU student Juwaan Walker instructed a hip-hop dance class. Walker knew what to do since he was recently featured in rapper Missy Elliot’s music video.

While some events have passed, there are still a number of events students can attend throughout African American Heritage Month.

The lineup of events includes a day of community service, a night of honest conversation about issues black students face, an African dance class and a soul food dinner at Dansbury.

Students are encouraged to help ESU celebrate African American Heritage month. Check out some of the events.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day of Service
10 a.m. – 4 p.m., University Center Commuter Lounge
During this time, care packages will be made for the homeless in East Stroudsburg.

Monday, Feb. 8, 2016
Honest Conversation
7 p.m., Linden Lounge
A discussion about the issues African American students face daily and how these issues affect them every day.

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016
Entrepreneurs in Motion Career Expo
2 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., Science and Technology Center
Learn how to start and run your own business from local entrepreneurs. Make sure you bring your resume and dress professionally.

AAHM Soul Food Dinner
4 p.m. – 8 p.m., Dansbury Commons
A cook-out style soul food dinner will be given with music presented by DJ Lady J.

DJ Lady J will bring hits from the ‘90s to celebrate the ‘90s for the 90 babies or those of interest.

African Dance Class
7 p.m., Common Grounds UC
La Niece Mobley of Culture’s Closet Performing Arts Studio comes to ESU to teach the basics of African Dance. Students are free. Faculty, staff and community cost is $5.
