The Madelon Powers Gallery is starting off the spring semester with Live Design, a new exhibit, by artists Jocelyn Kolb and Kimberly Snyder.

Joni Oye-Benintende, the director of the Madelon Powers Art Gallery, coordinates six exhibitions in the gallery each year. She received a grant from the PA Council on the Arts Partners in Art Regrant program in support of this exhibition.

Kolb graduated from Temple University of Pennsylvania in 2006 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts, and she earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Metals/Jewelry/CAD-CAM in 2008.

She is currently an assistant professor of Art & Design at East Stroudsburg University and has also taught at Albright College and Temple University.

Kolb has had many exhibitions including ones at the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Wayne Art Center in Pennsylvania and the Tyler School of Art in Pennsylvania.

“I create forms I find beautiful and combine them in accordance with my aesthetic that has an inseparable connection to my experiences, generation and environment. I discuss the idea of creating forms that are inspired by nature that have existed for centuries with current technologies and evolving materials” Kolb explained in a statement about the gallery.

Snyder received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in woodworking and sculpture and a Bachelors of Science in Art Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Snyder also received a Masters of Fine Arts in sculpture at Rhode Island School of Design.

She is currently an associate professor of Prototypes/Drafting and Furniture design a Pratt Institute in New York.

Some of Snyder’s exhibitions include Carnegie Museum, Long Gallery at West Chester University and Harrisburg Galleries Sculpture & Crafts.

“As a Sculptor and Product Designer, my work often blurs the line between the familiar object and the unknown…. Through the use of familiar imagery I investigate issues such as containment, anxiety, growth, private space, memory and identity” Snyder said, releaving a slightly different take than Kolb.

In addition to the exhibit, Jocelyn Kolb is also holding workshops on Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is also a 3D printing workshop for ages 13 to adult.

A workshop for creating and designing a laser cut box is available for grades eight to college on Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
