ESU’s Student Senate held its first town hall meeting of the semester last week with the theme of “how to get involved.”

This organization-and-activity-focused town hall was intended to act as a substitute for the usual spring club fair, since the weather has been less than cooperative and there has been a turnover in Student Senate.

Students from various organizations attended the meeting and participated in games, Q&A’s and club recruitment.

The meeting was held in Beers Lecture Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

As students walked in, the senators played upbeat music including songs like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win.”

Once the crowd was settled in the hall around 6:15 p.m., Fernando Alcantar, ESU’s associate director of student engagement, hosted a TV show theme song guessing game.

Alcantar took volunteers from the crowd and split them into four teams of two to play the game.

Theme songs that the players had to guess included those from “The Biggest Loser,” “King of the Hill,” “Agents of Shield” and “Orange Is the New Black.”

The team of Campus Activities Board (C.A.B.) members won the game.

Along with C.A.B., other organizations in attendance were the Warrior Elite, W.E.S.S radio station and the Computer Science Organization.

Alcantar followed the guessing game with a speech about how to get students involved on campus.

“The top three reasons students leave college: three- finances, two miss home, one- didn’t get involved,” said Alcantar early in his speech.

“The majority of people find out about events through word of mouth,” said Alcantar, who continued by saying that sometimes the word does not reach the ears it needs to, especially commuters.

C.A.B.’s President Melissa Ciment spoke next.

She opened by giving out prizes, including earphones and pens, to students who could name what events C.A.B. hosts on campus.

Some events the club hosts are concerts, Bronx Zoo trips, New York City day trips, Maui Wowi free smoothie days, and Center Court performances.

Ciment then held a Q&A and opened the floor for event suggestions, which included offering bus trips to more sporting events and hosting personalized product events for students to make T-shirts and phone cases.

The meeting continued with club recruitment by the Warrior Elite, the Computer Science Organization, The Stroud Courier and Relay for Life.

An event survey was passed out for students in attendance to fill out.

Survey questions included when the best times are for events to be held and whether the students live on campus or off.

Daniel Watson, Chair of Student Affairs, closed the Town Hall meeting with some final remarks.

“Help one another, retweet each other, smile when you walk past someone you know and keep up your grades,” said Watson.
