ESU’s Council of Trustees gained an eleventh member on Tuesday.

Mariam Juya, a junior biology major from Stroudsburg was sworn in as the student trustee.

All institutions within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) are required to have a Council of Trustees consisting of 11 members appointed by the Governor of Pa.

Two or more members must be alumni of the university they are serving, and one must be an undergraduate student

Juya is the first student trustee to sit with the council since Rebecca Keck’s departure in December 2014.

The Council of Trustees is responsible for, among other things, choosing a president, making recommendations to the chancellor and reviewing and approving the university budget.

The eleven members meet five times every year to discuss issues and make decisions.

As the student trustee, Juya will work with the council as a representative of the student body at ESU.

Juya was selected out of a group of applicants and underwent several interviews with several university officials including University President Dr. Marcia Welsh, PASSHE Chancellor Frank Brogan and the office of Pa. Governor Tom Wolf.

The Council will convene again on April 21 in the Innovation Center at 4 p.m.
