On Saturday, April 16, small businesses, radio stations, musicians and vinyl fans everywhere will celebrate the eighth annual Record Store Day.

Record Store Day was created in 2007 by a committee of record store owners, employees and enthusiasts as a way to celebrate over 1400 record stores in the U.S., and the atmosphere they cultivate in their surrounding communities.

According to Recordstoreday.com, “This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities.”

The first Record Store Day was held on April 19, 2008, and since then the celebration has spread nationwide.

“Throughout its nine years, cities across the United States including New York City, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston and Las Vegas have declared Record Store Day an official holiday,” according to Record Store Day’s website.

As a way to promote the event, the Record Store Day committee works with music labels and artists in order to release over 300 special edition singles, albums and recordings by musicians and bands from a multitude of time periods and genres.

Some Record Store Day exclusive releases include a 12” picture disc of David Bowie’s 1970 Album, “The Man Who Sold the World,” featuring rare, psychedelic 70s German artwork.

A double live LP of Alt-j’s 2015 performance at the Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado will also be featured. The entire package will include two colored Vinyl LPs, a CD and DVD in a gatefold sleeve.

A re-release of The Flaming Lips 1995 album, “Clouds Taste Metallic,” is another Record Store day exclusive.

It will be issued under the name of the tenth track on the album, “Lightning Strikes the Postman,” and it will feature an original comic by the founder of The Flaming Lips, Wayne Coyne.

As supporters of independent businesses, the Record Store Day foundation gives each participating record store complete liberty over sales and prices of the Record Store Day material.

The Record Store Day foundation advises fans to check with their local record stores about what Record Store Day material they will be carrying.

“Participating stores have complete control over their stock, store policies and which promotions they participate in… which is totally their prerogative,” according to Recordstoreday.com

Main Street Juke Box, located on 606 Main Street, is Stroudsburg’s destination for all things music. Main Street Jukebox will be a participating record store. Doors will open at 8 a.m. and will feature live music all day from bands like Disposable, Skysleeper, Mongooch and Lorg.
