Keisha Kauffman, junior political science and criminal justice major, has been elected as Vice President of Student Senate for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Kauffman has also been elected to serve as Vice President of Warrior Elite and Captain of the Cheerleading Team.

“I’ve never really put myself out there like that, especially in a role like this, so to see it actually pull through made me ecstatic,” says Kauffman.

Kauffman has several goals for all of her leadership roles in the coming semester.

“I want to set higher standards for senators. I think the bar has been raised in the past few years, but the bar can be raised even higher,” Kauffman explains.

Kauffman also aims to expand Senate’s annual Teddy Bear Drive to include other organizations on campus.

“Being a part of the cheerleading team and seeing how they have evolved is a big accomplishment. While I serve as captain, I hope to create a higher level of respect and hopefully increase our skill level so it’s more crowd pleasing.”

Kauffman would like to stress to students that she is friendly and is available to listen anytime.

“If you have an issue, come up to me and say ‘hi’ and I’ll have a whole conversation with you. I am more than willing to hear out any problem and so that we can hopefully find a solution.”

“As students we have a right to speak up about something we don’t like on campus,” Kauffman says.

Speaking up is the easiest way to make a difference, according to Kauffman.

Kauffman is excited to begin working with newly elected Student Senate President Andrew Kissling.

“We are polar opposites. I think we’re going to balance each other out very well.” Kauffman places significant emphasis on student participation on campus.

“Get involved the minute you get on campus,” urges Kauffman. “It helps your academics and it helps you socially, especially for freshmen and incoming students. If you get involved in an organization you instantly have a set of friends.”

“You only have so many years of college, so make the best of your years. In a minute, it’s going to be over and you don’t want to regret what you could have done and didn’t.”
