ESU’s women’s soccer team whipped the Clarion University Golden Eagles 3-0 last Saturday afternoon for its seventh straight win of the season.

The Warriors outshot the Golden Eagles 28-4 and were in total command of this game.

ESU also had a 6-2 edge in penalty kicks over Clarion.

But despite dominating the game in the first half, the Warriors could not find the back of the net.

Clarion sophomore goalkeeper Krista Mosi refused to give in and made six saves to deny ESU in the first half.

So the game remained scoreless after one half of play, but the floodgates would open in the second half.

Set pieces would make the difference as the Warriors were able to get their first two goals of the game within four minutes of each other.

In the 46th minute, ESU senior back Hannah Gombos was awarded a free kick. Her kick from 40 yards out was headed and redirected by sophomore forward Alex Pickett.

The deflection got past a diving Mosi and stayed just inside of the right goalpost for an improbable first goal for ESU.

Four minutes later, Pickett lofted a floating kick from 10 yards out that was just high enough to get past Clarion’s jumping goalkeeper to make the game 2-0 ESU.

Clarion freshman goalkeeper Brigid Stermel would replace Mosi in goal, but the Warriors continued their relentless offensive assault.

Gombos took a corner kick in the 65th minute that was headed in by senior back Laurel Neira for ESU’s third goal. Three goals would be more than enough as ESU junior goalkeeper Jules Harris made three saves to earn the shutout.

ESU will open a three-game home stand against California University tomorrow and will play IUP on Saturday for Family Weekend.
