ESU’s football team routed the Cheyney University Wolves 54-12 on a rainy night at Eiler-Martin Stadium last Saturday.

Just about everything went right for the Warriors in this game.

The Warriors won the opening coin toss and elected to receive.

ESU’s first drive would stall inside the red zone. The Warriors had to settle for a field goal attempt, but placekicker Nicolas Ruiz missed his first kick.

However, a Cheyney player jumped offsides, so ESU got another chance to kick the field goal. This time, the kick was good.

The Warriors led the Wolves 3-0.

On the ensuing possession, Cheyney’s pass was intercepted by redshirt junior linebacker Mike Wiand. That set up a two-yard touchdown run by redshirt senior tailback Robert Healy to make the score 10-0 ESU.

It was that kind of night for the Warriors.

Later in the first quarter, ESU sophomore tailback James Bell would score on an eightyard touchdown run to make the score 17-0.

The ensuing kickoff was fielded by Cheyney’s James Madlock around the one-yard line. Madlock then inexplicably took a few steps back into his own end zone, and he was promptly tackled by a swarm of players in red jerseys for a safety.

The Warriors led 19-0 at the end of the first quarter, and the final result was never in doubt in this game.

The Warriors put up 40 straight points that went unanswered until the Wolves finally scored when Cheyney’s Erik Heller scored a touchdown on a 14-yard run at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score 54-12.

Healy had 20 carries for 112-yard rushing and scored three touchdowns.

Healy also threw a six-yard touchdown pass to redshirt junior receiver Tommy House in the second quarter.

The Warriors were unstoppable in this game. That allowed head coach Denny Douds to use three different quarterbacks.

Redshirt junior quarterback Tim DiGiorgio got some playing time and threw his first touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to redshirt senior tight end Anthony Castillo.

The Warriors (3-2, 1-1) return to the gridiron for a road game against Millersville this Saturday afternoon.
