On a cold and windy Oct. 22, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds beat ESU’s men’s soccer team 3-0 behind a hat trick by UDC freshman midfielder Gabriel Torres in a non-conference game at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Last Saturday’s game was the last home game of the regular season for the Warriors. Before the start, the Warriors honored the seven seniors on their team.

But UDC’s Torres was a one-man wrecking crew. He struck early and often. Torres scored two goals in the first half alone.

If that wasn’t enough, Torres scored for the third time just 13 seconds after halftime to complete the hat trick.

As great as Torres was, this game will be remembered for a collision.

In the 36th minute, ESU junior midfielder Cory Binagia and UDC senior midfielder Victor Salinas Furio both tried to head the ball, but their heads collided instead.

Although Salinas Furio was hurt, he was able to walk away under his own power. Binagia was down on the field for several minutes before he was able to get up.

The game continued as both players received extensive medical treatment, but the Warriors could not score.

UDC freshman goalkeeper Joao Brusamolin made four saves to shut out ESU.

The Warriors are tied with California University of Pennsylvania for sixth place in the PSAC. The top six teams in the conference will make the postseason PSAC Tournament beginning on Nov. 1.
