Much to the disappointment of the home fans, the top-ranked ESU Women’s Field Hockey team was upset 1-0 by the Millersville University Marauders at Whitenight Field last Friday afternoon.

In only the second minute of the game, Millersville sophomore forward Aliza Mizak took a rebound and scored the lone goal of the game.

There would be no more scoring after that. Millersville denied ESU scoring chances and made the game a tactical defensive battle. In total, the Warriors only had five shots in the game.

Millersville had six shots in the game, but the Marauders held an 11-5 edge over the Warriors in corners.

ESU’s best chance to score came in the 63rd minute of the game. Senior forward Robin Stevenson had a shot-on-goal, but Millersville senior goalkeeper Samantha Rumler was there to make her only save of the game.

On Monday, it was announced that ESU was selected to play in the NCAA Division II Championships. The Warriors will host archrival Shippensburg in a first round game at home this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

In two previous meetings this season, the Warriors have beaten Shippensburg 1-0 in overtime and 2-1 in doubleovertime.

The winner of the first round game will advance to play Millersville in a semifinal game held in Easton, Mass. on Friday, Nov. 18.
