Students looking for guidance in academic and career achievement, social skills and emotional well-being will find the help they need at the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services right here at ESU.

The Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, otherwise known as CAPS, provides a range of services designed to develop the educational, social and emotional comfort of ESU students.

The professional staff members will help students to gain self-confidence and skills they need to make the most of life and their experience here at ESU.

Located on the second floor of the Flagler-Metzgar building, the counseling department provides a wide range of clinical services.

The CAPS website can be accessed through the student life tab from ESU’s homepage.

Students have the ability to discuss a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, family and relationship problems, academic and career goals, loneliness, as well as drug and alcohol problems.

As the website states, “Any concerns can be discussed confidentially with a counselor to enhance psychological growth and increase problem solving skills,” assuring students that their discussion is safe and private.

Under the immediate help tab, the website provides several numbers students can access during normal hours and after hours.

They also provide information for other resources such as the campus police, Pocono Medical Center and the crisis hotline of Monroe County.

Help is readily available to anyone in need. ESU’s counseling webpage states that individual counseling is used “to aid students in addressing personal and interpersonal difficulties and to promote student growth and development.”

The website also states that they provide couples counseling, which “aids couples in relieving emotional discomfort that comes from conflict within their relationship.”

Additionally, the website states, “Consultation is offered to faculty, staff, peers, and parents to address concerns regarding behavior performance. CAPS also sponsors and presents a variety of educational and personal growth programs and workshops.”If you are an incoming freshman or a student who is strolling to decide on a major, CAPS can help you select a major, or find a career path.

The center also aids with study skills, time management, and other academic success strategies.

Finally, as the website states, they provide referral service in which, “CAPS faculty members endeavor to provide the best possible care and services to clients. At times, this care may mean a referral to other offices or individuals within the university, or to professionals in the community.”

To schedule an appointment or to ask questions, you can contact the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office at (570) 422 – 3277. The office is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
