“Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things”

This documentary follows Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus as they travel around the country speaking about their new book and the lifestyle they follow.

Known as “The Minimalists” to their subscribers and followers, the pair runs a website in order to reach out and educate people about being a minimalist.

This documentary aims to inspire others to adapt this way of living in order to reject the American ideal that material things equal happiness.

“Holy Hell”

Will Allen, a filmmaker, documents his time in the spiritual group known as the Buddhafield in Los Angeles, Ca.

This documentary interviews several prior members of the group who speak about their time within the community and expose their leader for the wrong-doings he has committed.

Through footage taken of the cult, Allen aims to tell the story of how these ex-members got sucked in and when they realized they needed to get out.

“The Hunting Ground”

Centered around two former college students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this documentary reveals the story of their rape and the procedures dealt with while trying to get justice.

Looking deeper into other cases, this film criticizes the lack of actions taken by multiple universities when it comes to sexual assault on campus.

Touching on the societal stigma that comes along with being a victim, this documentary aims to expose the terrible system that leads many victims into silence.

“My Beautiful Broken Brain”

This Netflix original documentary tells the story of Lotje Sodderland and her recovery after a brain injury.

Suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at age 34, Lotje completely lost her ability to read, write and speak coherently.

This film documents her journey for one year after the incident through personal videos filmed by herself on her phone, revealing her gains and losses during the time of her recovery.

“The Source Family”

This 2012 documentary tells the story of Father Yod, a professional guru, and his cult, the Source Family.

Set in Hollywood during the 1970’s, this film captures the life of those involved in the communal living of this cult and the increasing problems surrounding the members.

Through interviews with former members, the life of the cult and the psychotic, lasting impact its leader had on members is revealed.
