On Thursday, April 20, the Department of Sport Management and the Career Development Center will be hosting the second S.C.O.R.E. Symposium from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. inside the Hoeffner Science & Technology Center.

Dr. Jaedeock Lee is the Chairman of the Department of Sport Management.

Lee said, “We started the first S.C.O.R.E. Symposium in the fall of 2015.”

S.C.O.R.E. is an acronym for Sport, Careers, Opportunity, Recruitment and Employment.

The symposium is headlined by two keynote speakers who will present at 2 p.m. inside room 117. The first keynote speaker is Michael Rucker, Manager of Ticket Sales Operations at Madison Square Garden.

The second keynote speaker is James Greene. He is the Director of Championships at the Big East Conference.

“Rucker and Greene are both ESU alums who serve on our Alumni Advisory Board,” said Lee. “They will talk about how to break into the sports industry.”

There will be a panel discussion following the two keynote speakers. It will take place between 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the same room.

“We have a very strong lineup for our panel session,” stated Lee.

“Professor Edward Arner will moderate the panel discussion,” said Lee. “We will also collect questions from students for the Q&A session.”

The panelists include the following: Benjamin Brenneman, East Stroudsburg School District’s Director of Athletics and Activities; Malcolm Huggins, Assistant Director of Athletics at SUNY Oswego; Renee Ricciuti, Athletic Ticket Manager at Lafayette College and Joseph Delchop, Premium Membership Executive with Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls.

“Our department requires students to do an internship. Some of our students are doing an internship with Brenneman,” stated Lee.

“Huggins served on our advisory board, and Delchop participated in our first S.C.O.R.E. event. Ricciuti is a 2015 graduate who got a job with Lafayette,” said Lee.

Following the panel discussion, there will be a networking opportunity from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the lower lobby of the Science and Technology Center. Business professional attire is recommended because it is a mini career expo.

“In addition, we encourage students to bring in their resumes for future jobs and internships,” said Lee.

“There are great opportunities for our students,” said Lee. “It’s not only for seniors, but for juniors and sophomores as well.”

“We believe that our students will have a tremendous opportunity to build valuable relationships,” said Lee.

Many sports organizations will be there including the New York Red Bulls, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Bethlehem Steel FC and the Philadelphia Union.

“Along with our sport management majors, we sent emails to business management and HRTM (Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management) majors,” said Lee.

“Our students appreciate the opportunity to meet professionals. Most of them are our alums,” stated Lee.

“It’s good to see them grow professionally,” said Lee. “For example, our students were able to get an internship with the Brooklyn Nets through our Alumni Advisory Board.”

As for students who aspire to be sports agents, Lee encourages their sport management majors to go to law school.

Those students who are interested in attending the S.C.O.R.E. Symposium next Thursday afternoon can go here to register. Admission is free, but business casual attire is recommended for the networking event at four o’clock.

Lee said, “Our first symposium drew 60 to 70 participants.”

“As of today, 75 students have signed up,” said Lee. “Our target is 100 students.”
