This past week, we got the opportunity to sit down with the current chief of police, Edward J. Iandoli, and ask him a few questions regarding the safety of East Stroudsburg University.
We’ve noticed that a few of the safety lights are out around both main campus and the ridge. Is there any reason for that? When do you expect all of the lights to be fully operable again?
“So, I don’t have a time frame, but we are aware of it, and we’re looking at new technology. Those phones went out a long, long time ago, the 90’s. So, to get parts for them, it’s very difficult and new technology, for safety around campus. The one thing now, those emergency light phones were put in prior to everybody having a cell phone. A lot of people carry cell phones and can connect with emergency personnel by just dialing 9-1-1, very quickly.”
What are some safety resources that students may not know they have access to?
“The one thing we provide is, if you don’t feel comfortable at night going back to your dorm, University Ridge, or the apartments, we do provide safe rides for the students. That is just by calling the police department and just explaining your situation. A police officer would come out to where you are, or security officer, to escort you to your dorm.”
How many police officers are currently on staff?

“We have twelve officers here at ESU. We’re currently looking for two additional police officers.”
On average, how many officers are on duty? Is that number consistent throughout the entire day?
“Yes, the average is three officers per shift. That is pretty consistent.”
Are there any new safety protocols you have/want to start implementing?
“The big thing is, it’s important that students register for the emergency alerts. That’s where you will get all of your critical information, any emergency happening on campus, or if there is a snow event or a weather event. You’ll get those notifications for closings. I’m looking to do some community policing. I’m working on doing coffee with a cop, so you get to know the ESU police department.”
