Among other recent additions to staff, ESU’s Stroud Courier introduces junior Amy Perez, from Pocono Summit, Pa., as a new copy editor.

On Thursday Oct. 23, Perez introduced herself to the Courier in a short interview, where she expressed enthusiasm for her new position.

Perez, who graduated from Pocono Mountain East High School in 2008, studies English literature and creative expression. While she is new to the Courier, she has always been an avid writer, who has expressed interest in journalism from a young age.

“When I was much younger, I always thought I wanted to do journalism— photojournalism specifically, because I used to love photography,” said Perez.

In addition to her passion for writing, Perez also enjoys the outdoors, spending time with her boyfriend and his dog, listening to music and reading. She cites Paulo Coelho, author of “The Alchemist,” and how his style of writing influences her approach to her position at the Courier.

“He’s always teaching you something in each of his books. Like, one could be about lust, one could be about grief. There’s always something specific and he’s telling the story to teach you. I always want to help people, and I think that’s part of it when I write,” says Perez.

In addition to being a student and editor at the courier, Perez also works as a secretary for both ESU’s Counseling and Psychological Services and Health and Wellness Education and Prevention. There, she supports both offices in their daily operations and manages administrative tasks so that they can run smoothly.

These skills translate into her new role as an editor as Perez emphasizes attention to detail in her work, in addition to honesty and integrity. She also works to optimize the quality of her work and ensure the goals of the courier and its staff members are met.

“I want to make sure that what’s being put out is good, because that’s gonna reflect on you guys. I’m learning and doing my best. I think that’s really important,” said Perez.

As a lifelong writer recently involved in the field of journalism, Perez looks forward to expanding her skillset as a writer, and even sees herself continuing in the field in the future.

“I like the challenge. And I’m someone who is always gonna want to try to learn something new. I wouldn’t mind getting into publishing or doing something on the back end, and being able to be a part of other people’s process,” says Perez.
