Each week a Disc Jockey from East Stroudsburg University’s radio station, 90.3 WESS, is selected as DJ of the week for their exceptional performance and hard work on the air.

This week’s DJ of the week is Brian Silva for his radio show, “Brian on Broadway,” which received a national award as the most innovative program through the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.

Silva, a senior at ESU, is from Carlisle, Pa.

He is pursuing a degree in communication as well as minors in theatre and digital media technologies for television production.

The inspiration for his show stems from his love of performing.

In high school, Silva participated in several performance groups such as the musical, school and show choir, Shakespeare Troupe and the Community Theater.

When he joined WESS in 2012, his goal was to do a show that he could really excel at.

“I wanted to do a show that I could really grasp the concept and really knock out of the park,” he said.

With the help of his close friend, Mike, they developed the concept for the radio program, “Brian on Broadway,” where Silva showcases a musical he has either seen or performed in, with the full soundtrack and a well-written script to encompass the full score of the show.

The program has become a platform for Silva to be spontaneous, working on his improvisational skills as a theater minor, where he also talks about theater news as well as interviewing members of the ESU Theater department.

His favorite musical to present is “West Side Story” due to its timeless manner and passionate storyline.

“I love the music and the drama that is incorporated in the movements and the music, and I also have underscores of the production from the New York Philharmonic that make the narration of the scenes much more interesting.” he said.

“My favorite part about WESS is definitely getting to hear the people around you and their own creative choices on their shows. I’ve learned a lot with music by listening to other people’s programs and I have gotten to know more people because of it too,” Silva stated.

Silva’s aspirations for the future are to secure a communications based career for a media outlet, which he hopes celebrates diverse content, similar to his experiences at WESS.

Listeners can catch Brain Silva’ show, “Brian on Broadway,” Fridays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on 90.3 WESS via the radio, or they can stream WESS over the web at tunein.com/radio/WESS.

Those who cannot listen to “Brian on Broadway” at its original time can listen to internet podcasts of the show by going to Radiofreeamerica.com and searching WESS.
