Over this past summer, ESU’s Mattioli Recreation Center received all new equipment. This upgrade features brand new free weights, machines, and cardio equipment, and has come just in time to welcome the new students for the 2017-2018 school year.

With an increase in on-campus housing due to the recent completion of Sycamore Suites, this upgrade is certainly well-timed, and seems to be a welcome change according to ESU students.

“I really like the new upgrade,” says Exercise Science major Bailey Colson. “There is some equipment I miss having, but overall I think they did really good with it,” Colson also says.

Students will be pleased to hear that most of their favorite workout equipment is still available. However, the gym has now added a second squat rack and deadlift mat.

This change will help to reduce wait times, which can become longer than desired during peak hours.

Upon entering the gym, students will also notice the largest new addition to the rec center, the Super Functional Machine.

This machine sports various ropes, hanging bars, dip bars, and climbing bars.

The cardio equipment has also received an update, including upgraded treadmills and ellipticals, as well as a brand new addition the Stairmaster. This device simulates climbing up stairs with the added benefit of providing additional resistance.

“The Stairmaster is a very beneficial and functional piece of cardio equipment,” says Rec Center Student Employee, Steven Faris.

“Overall [the gym] is a lot better than what we had before,” added Faris.

The new cardio equipment offers a unique incentive for students who wish to have more fun while exercising, Netflix and Hulu integration.

Students can now create a free account on Matrix cardio equipment and then sign into their Netflix and or their Hulu accounts, allowing them to watch their favorite shows while exercising.

This service is usable on any Matrix cardio machine. With the new media integration, more people might be inclined to workout.

In light of the recent upgrades, there has never been a better time to check out ESU’s Mattioli Recreation Center.

The Rec Center is open 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday-Sunday.
