“Congratulations girls, you played with heart as a true warrior. We are so proud of you!” proclaimed Madeline Constantine the program director of the ESU Women’s Rugby team.
With the undefeated regular season over, the ESU Women’s rugby team won the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union division playoffs two weeks ago.
ESU Senior Sofia Difilippo won the Most valuable player award during the championship match.
This past weekend however saw the team travel to Culpeper Virginia for the National Collegiate Rugby Playoffs.
Coached by ESU Alumni Angela Horner, The team won their first-round match on Saturday by defeating The Citadel, a team from South Carolina, with a score of 41-12.
On Sunday they Competed against a team that was ranked 4th in the nation, Lee University from Tennessee.
In an effort that was thwarted ESU Women’s rugby fell to Lee University 36-17.
The team was given a Second place regional trophy the region.
“It was a pretty tough match, they were a very good competitor. They were definitely the hardest team we’ve played all season.” – said Cira Frame, Hooker, Senior. When talking to Ms. Frame about the season as a whole, “This season was very special. Not only did we go undefeated in our regular season but we are ranked 7th in the nation.”
She talked about some of her personal highlights on the season, “Getting a huge breakaway while playing Shippensburg, blowing through rucks, and winning the EPRU championship at home.”
Ms. Frame also had this to say about, this next season coming up, “our girls are just going to continue to grow and I’m looking forward to our 7s season this spring and hopefully we get to go to nationals for 7s, and then again next fall for 15s.”
Cira Frame and the rest of the ESU Rugby team have one mission statement in mind, win a Championship.
As they look to build their team, by gathering new players and building themselves individually. It seems they only have one goal in mind, and they will build off of this season where they were undefeated in the regular season.
The girl’s rugby team is proud of what they have accomplished but wants to make themselves and the university proud.
To outperform what they did this past season they would need to have an undefeated regular season, then win the EPRU again and move on to win the Championship.
The team is also looking for new players to join. If you are interested to join the women’s rugby team, you can join by going to their warriorlink page, www.warriorlink.esu.edu/organization/esuwrfc
There are forms for those looking to participate to fill out.
According to the Warriorlink page, there is no experience needed to participate on the Rugby team.
Any questions or concerns you could also contact Lindsay Foster at lfoster5@live.esu.edu as she is the president of ESU’s Women’s Rugby team.
As these women rest up during the winter, they surely will be back to play again in the Spring and continue with another dominant season.
