The ESU University Police released the annual Clery Report, an analysis of crime and safety statistics on campus from 2022 on Sept. 29, 2023.

The report analyzes crime and safety statistics on campus and defines a list of terms for students to familiarize themselves with concerning violence and crime. Crime statistics heightened from the previous year, many of them alarming.

“The policy statements address the school’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, for example, responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses,” states the official email from the ESU police. “Three years’ worth of statistics are included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the school and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus.”

Six rapes were listed on the report from 2022, compared to one from 2021 and zero from 2020.

Among other listed crimes that increased were sex offenses: fondling, auto theft, drug law arrests and dating violence (from the Violence Against Women Act).

While many rates have alarmingly increased, hate crime incidents remained at zero for the past three years.

The crime rate, however, increased significantly in some areas such as vandalism and disorderly conduct.

After going over crime rates, the report highlighted fire and evacuation safety incidents that happened on campus.

According to the official email sent about the subject, students can also request a paper copy from the University Police Department or from the Human Resources Office.
