One of the easiest ways to cure boredom is by watching a movie or two. Sitting through multiple hours of good acting, bad acting, and everything in between can save a horrible night. Over the years, there have been many successes in the theaters and through streaming services. Some movies have topped the box office and others have flopped. This is the weekly movie flashback where we look back on the most triumphant films at the domestic box office from different years.

2000 is the year when everyone thought the world would end. Coldplay made their debut, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was published, and Boy Meets World aired its final season. Overall, it was a pretty successful year in terms of creativity whether it be through music, novels, or television.

Let’s get started:

  1. The third-highest-grossing movie in 2000 was: Gladiator

Gladiator tells the story of a former Roman general who seeks revenge against the emperor who took away his family and freedom. From its release on May 5, 2000, to October 19, 2000, Gladiator made $186,610,052. The budget for the film was $103,000,000 making this an incredible triumph. If you were looking for a successful action movie with someone other than Tom Cruise, Gladiator might be your best bet.

2. The second-highest-grossing movie in 2000 was: Mission: Impossible II

For all those Tom Cruise fans, here is the second movie of his everlasting storyline. Mission: Impossible II follows Ethan Hunt as he tries to stop terrorists from releasing a lethal virus. This film was released at the end of May and remained in theaters until October. It earned $215,409,889 over this span surpassing the budget of $125,000,000. It can be assumed this series had a pretty telling beginning hence why it has continued into 2023.

3. Finally, the highest-grossing movie in 2000 was: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

That’s right. A Christmas movie released from November of 2000 to May of 2001 became the film with the most profit. By the end of 2000, this film had earned $251,628,705 which is more than double the budget of $123,000,000. Jim Carrey took his part as the Grinch and worked with the team to produce the most successful film of the year.

The top three movies vary from actors to genres to actual storylines. The list has action, romance, and comedy for everyone. After 23 years, these movies are still watched and talked about more than anyone could have predicted. This concludes this week’s movie flashback.
