ESU’s Writing Studio is one of the many resources for enrolled students seeking help with their essays, resumes and cover letters. The studio has been running since 2006 but has seen a massive increase in activity over the past few semesters.
According to the studio’s online data, the staff helps over 200 students each semester. Depending on the workload for the semester, this could mean the studio sees anywhere from 300-500 sessions. There are 12-15 tutors who work either virtually or in-person.
With the spring semester in full swing, the writing studio is back in action in-person and online. The studio has an improved platform, a different appearance, more hours and new tutors and receptionists.
“The Writing Studio is such a great tool for students to use for all things writing-related, said the studio’s graduate assistant Marissa Slowinski. “We have highly qualified tutors, and a new system to help smooth out the overall appointment process. You can schedule ahead of Warriorfish or walk in and get the assistance you deserve!”
Every ESU student has to use Warriorfish at one point or another. Starting in September 2023, the writing studio switched to Warriorfish to schedule tutoring sessions. After working through the quirks and unique setups, the studio is officially comfortable with the platform.
Students can log into their Warriorfish and schedule an appointment with an available tutor. If a student is unsure how to use the website, they can come right into the studio and one of the receptionists can guide them through the process. This platform shows the tutors and their hours so students know who they book and when to schedule.
Aside from using Warriorfish, the studio itself has a new look and changes with the holidays. The tutoring room now has more tables, space and decoration. Tutors no longer sit on the far ends of the tables but rather right across from the students to make the session smoother.
The windows, doors and surfaces are decked out in holiday decorations whether it be cute Christmas lights or Valentine’s Day garland. The studio also has a bulletin board located on the third floor of Stroud with relevant information and helpful tips.
Since the studio experienced larger numbers of tutees last semester, the hours have changed. The studio is still open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Also, the studio offers late-night Zoom sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Finally, the studio has hired new tutors and receptionists to assist students with any writing-related questions. The tutors are there to go through essays, cover letters and other written works with their peers. Tutors help explain different grammar rules, writing styles and organization techniques.
The receptionists are brand new to the studio as of this spring semester. When students come in with a booked appointment, they check in with one of the receptionists before starting a session. Furthermore, the receptionists can explain how to set up an appointment with tutees if Warriorfish is confusing.
ESU’s Writing Studio is a gem that many students fail to utilize. It is free, easily located and incredibly useful. Students can book an appointment and receive help at no additional cost.
“I’ve always loved writing, so getting to help others with their writing is very fulfilling. The Writing Studio tutors are also a lovely group of people, and it is never a dull workday when we’re together,” said junior Calla Sandt.
If you’re in need of some writing tips and are unsure who to ask, come check out the studio!
