As spring break approaches, searches for travel destinations and spending are on the rise. For these reasons and others, it is important for students to stay safe and smart with all travel plans.

Since 2020, the number of travelers has continued to increase. Despite the inflation of prices, students are still looking to get away on their break from school.

“We saw a 64% year-over-year increase in spring break bookings from 2022 to 2023,” said Tim Hentschel, CEO of HotelPlanner in an interview with Forbes. “Based on that, we’re projecting a 10% to 15% total increase in spring break bookings this year.”

Not only does this mean an increase in demand for lodging, but it also means the larger the crowds are likely to be. In Miami Beach, Florida, a popular spot for spring breakers, this has been a major issue.

“Newly-elected Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said that last year, there were two fatal shootings during spring break,” reports Ted Scouten of CBS News. Areas like Miami Beach that see large spring break crowds can have a profound impact on crime rates.

This raises concerns for the safety of students who travel to such popular destinations. Though it has not seemed to stop people from traveling, it may mean more need for security precautions in busy locations.

Travelers may want to research hot spots and stay with a small group rather than go somewhere solo. Avoiding larger crowds may also be more beneficial when it comes to safety as well.

Along with staying in a group, having open communication with friends is important in case of getting separated. Keeping phones charged and traveling with a portable charger is a smart option when in an unfamiliar place.

Avoiding price increases on vacation essentials can also become an issue for traveling students. Booking a flight, Airbnb, or buying other essentials early is often a travelers best bet to avoid even more of a price hike.

Eating out at restaurants can also be pricy and crowded, especially relying on that alone for food. Opting to make some meals and drinks at home can save money and serve as a fun activity with a group of friends.

Traveling in general is expensive and can come with safety risks. Being safe when using Ubers is imperative anytime but should especially be considered when traveling out of town.

Spring break is not something that should scare students away, however, the stats of the past may make them want to be more cautious. Knowing what is going on in a place ahead of time can save travelers a headache later.

Researching and being prepared are some of the easiest ways to ensure a hassle-free trip. These methods can help to create a safe and fun spring break.
