It’s officially Spring, and ESU is looking to break in the new season with a show. “Heathers: The Musical” will be adapted from the 1989 comedy film as part of the University’s 2024 Spring Production.

Running from April 11 to April 14 at the Smith McFarland Mainstage Theatre, located in the Fine Arts Building on campus, the production promises a unique take on a dark-humored comedy.

“I’m so excited to see ‘Heathers: the Musical.’ I remember when I first watched the movie and I thought it was so twisted and funny,” said Mary MacIntire, 22, a junior English major from East Stroudsburg, Pa. “I loved the aesthetic of everything, but I haven’t seen the musical before so I don’t know the songs yet,” MacIntire continued. “But I can’t wait to go to one of the shows on campus!”

The musical follows Veronica Sawyer, a clever individual who infiltrates Westerberg High’s powerful clique, the Heathers. Yet, her world becomes all the more complicated when a mysterious love interest is introduced, one with his own plans for the popular clique.

“I’m really excited to see the play,” said Viansa Bastidas, 22, a junior English major from Bushkill, Pa. “I’ve been planning to go with a few of my friends for a girl’s night,” Bastidas commented. “I really want to hear the song ‘Candy Store’ and see all the costumes.”

The play will be directed by the assistant professor of theatre and department co-chair Jason Narvy, with associate professor of music, Brian E. Hodge, who is directing the musical numbers.

“This is one of the most challenging scores our university has ever attempted, but our students are performing very admirably, and we’re pleased with the results,” said Hodge.

The doors for the production open at 7:30 p.m. for the dates of April 11, 12 and 13, while April 14 will have an earlier showing that takes place at 2:00 p.m. Admission for the show varies in price with students that show their school IDs having to pay $10 while faculty and senior citizens will need to pay $15. And for general admission, $18 a ticket.

Due to the university’s theater department expecting high demand, purchasing tickets in advance for the show is encouraged. However, there is the potential for at-the-door sales to be made for the event too.

ESU also warns that the recommended age for viewing the production should be 14 and above due to the nature of the subject matter. Further information on the warning can be found here.

Individuals are also encouraged to contact ESU’s art department for reservations, additional information and assistance for special accommodations. The department can be contacted via email at esuarts@esu.edu and by phone at (570) 422-3694.

As “Heathers: The Musical” takes to the stage, attendees will have the chance to see the university’s theater and fine arts programs in action. Boasting a challenging score and a unique premise, the upcoming production of “Heathers: The Musical” promises to be interesting with its blend of dark humor and an engaging story.
