The ESU University Police released the annual Clery Report, an analysis of crime and safety statistics on campus during the past three years, on Sept. 30, 2024.

The report, showing new data from the 2023 academic year, lists crime statistics on campus and defines a list of terms for students to familiarize themselves with. Crime statistics from the 2023 year have heightened in some areas while also lowering in others.

Information and detail from the document are, according to the University Police’s official email, meant to “enhance your understanding of the important role safety has here at East Stroudsburg University.”

ESU’s crime rate was the most significant increase from the previous year. In 2022, the crime rate was, for example, 292 in theft. In 2023, however, that number increased to 543. This increased rate occurred in various other areas as well, including drug laws, liquor laws, burglary and disorderly conduct.

While many rates have increased, hate crime incidents have remained at zero for the past three. There were also zero reported crime incidents that occurred during the year at Stony Acres.

After reviewing crime incidents, the Clery report moved on to cover fire and evacuation safety events that occurred on campus during the 2023 academic year.

Fire drills occurred throughout all of the residence halls, with Minsi Hall having the most alarms at 13. Sycamore Suites came in a close second with 12 drills total. While 12 of Minsi Hall’s alarms were due to contractor dust, Sycamore had five that were due to illicit activity.

The only recorded direct fire incident came from the University Ridge Building Two, where a fire was reported in an oven.

Readers should be aware that the Clery report contains all reported data. If you or anyone you know is suffering and needs help, please reach out immediately to the University Police. Students may also request a paper copy of the Clery report at the University Police office.
