ESU Police Talk About the Gunshots That Happened Early Sunday Morning

ESU University Police released information about the shots fired early in the morning on Sunday Oct. 27. 

Ralph Elick Chief of Police met with the Stroud Courier this morning to share information on what happened during the ESU student event that was happening in Zimbar-Liljenstein Hall. 

Elick said that the ESU Police was notified of many non-ESU students trying to enter the event. The non-ESU students were turned away at the door due to the event being a students only. 

The University Police said that about five gunshots were set off and it is believed to have only been one weapon involved. Elick expressed that he was happy no one was hurt during the isolated incident.

There were about 100 students inside the event at the time the gunshot went off. When the shots were fired the student dispersed and left the area on their own.

It is unknown what caused the shooting to happen, University Police state there were no reports of assault early in the evening related to the event. 

The suspects that were detained were released and believed to not be a part of the incident, the event is still an ongoing investigation. ESU Police encourage any eye-witnesses to come forward with any information that could be helpful in figuring out who did this. 

University Police said that they will be reviewing camera footage hoping to find out exactly what happened. Whoever set off the gunshots is looking to be charged with reckless endangerment. 

 Elick encourages students to travel in groups and if any student feels unsafe to take advantage of the safety rides that are provided by ESU.
