If I could give one piece of advice to my fellow ESU students, it would be to study abroad. Last semester, during the spring of 2026, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad at the University of Chester, in Chester, England. This opportunity was offered to me by East Stroudsburg University and ISEP Study Abroad, which I could not be more grateful for.

While abroad, I was able to travel to 16 different countries and develop my intercultural competence. Not only that, but I was able to make connections with people from across the globe and create meaningful, life-long relationships. While at the University of Chester, I had the privilege of completing my general education courses while simultaneously learning more about the English culture. I loved being able to interact with local students and compare teaching styles between England and the United States.

Additionally, I enjoyed being able to explore the beautiful, history-rich city of Chester throughout the week and then other incredible cities over the weekend. Although I learned a great deal within the classroom, I would argue that I learned just as much, if not more, outside of it.

During my weekend trips, traveling to other countries, I learned how to navigate public transportation, book accommodations, respect unique cultures and expand my worldview. I noticed my confidence improve immensely between the months of January and July, better preparing me for life and the field of education.

As a future educator, I will reflect on this experience to incorporate different cultures into my own classroom and encourage students to follow their dreams. Undoubtedly, the skills, knowledge, and experience I gained from living in Europe for nearly six months will influence the decisions I make for the rest of my life.

I will always remember getting my head wrapped in the Sahara Desert, teaching me more about African culture, and touring St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, reminding me of Ireland’s impressive history. I will never forget riding cable cars in Switzerland, trying pizza in Italy, watching football in Spain, and listening to authentic bagpipes in Scotland. These experiences have allowed me to expand my worldview and become a more inclusive, well-rounded individual.

Without a doubt, studying abroad was the best decision I have ever made. Embarking on this experience gave me the opportunity to make unique connections, develop a greater appreciation for my peers, and blossom into the person I am today. Additionally, it allowed me to become a more independent, mature, and worldly individual, preparing me wonderfully for my future.

Again, I would like to express my gratitude towards the University of Chester, East Stroudsburg University, and ISEP Study Abroad for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Prior to studying abroad, I never would have believed that I could have confidently navigated foreign airports, effectively managed my time and money, and create genuine friendships with people from all across the globe.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity I had to face my fears and the decision I made to do it. For anyone considering studying abroad or making a difficult decision, let this be your sign to follow your heart and take that risk.
