The Washington Commanders announced last week that they have named East Stroudsburg University football alumnus John Glenn ‘05 as assistant special teams coach.

Glenn has spent the past 12 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, serving as the linebackers coach and as the special teams assistant. He has served in a variety of roles within the organization, earning a reputation in the NFL as a quality defensive-minded coach.

While serving as the special teams assistant in Seattle, Glenn helped guide the organization to victory in Super Bowl XLVlll. Glenn is now entering his 13th year as a coach in the NFL and looks to bring championship experience to the Washington Commanders.

As a linebacker coach in 2021, Glenn worked closely with former All-Pro defensive linebacker Bobby Wagner. In 2023, Wagner led the NFL in tackles (183), being one of the best defensive units the league has seen in recent years.

The Washington Commanders finished the 2023–24 season with a 4-13-0 record. Next season, Glenn will lead a special teams group that hopes to improve dramatically in order to make a run in the postseason.

Glenn was a three-year letterwinner as the starting linebacker for the Warriors. During the Warriors’ NCAA playoff campaigns in 2004 and 2005, he was a vital member of the team. Glenn helped the Warriors win their first NCAA playoff win in school history in 2004.

In 2005, Glenn led the Warriors to the NCAA Division ll semifinals, establishing the ESU football program as one of the top teams in the country. He would finish his collegiate career with 160 tackles, five interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and eight pass breakups.

His coaching career began at North Carolina Wesleyan College (2006–08), where he spent three seasons as a linebacker coach. Before coaching in the NFL, Glenn got a shot at coaching in the Pac-12, spending two seasons (2010–11) with the University of Washington as a quality control coach.

John Glenn has finalized the Washington Commanders coaching staff under Dan Quinn for the next season. Since Glenn and Quinn have been coaching together for years in Seattle, they have established a chemistry between them.
