The spring commencement of East Stroudsburg University will be host to a large crowd of students, family, and friends all converging at the Kohler Field House for the spring 2018 graduation ceremony.
This year the Reverend Jeffrey Brown, a nationally recognized leader and expert in gang, youth and urban violence reduction and coalition building, will join those in attendance as a guest speaker. Brown is the founder of Rebuilding Every City Around Peace, an organization with a national initiative designed to assist municipalities bridge the faith-based community, the government, and law enforcement agencies.
The goal of RECAP is toreduce gang violence.
Years ago Brown experienced his neighborhood becoming overrun with drugs and violence.
To combat the issue, he listened to the young people in the community in order to effect change.
He was able to create a relationship with the youth of his community by listening and working with the youth, instead of preaching to them.
Also, Brown a co-founder of the DzBoston Ten Point Coalition,dz a faith-based group that was a valued part of the DzBoston Miracle,dz a system by which the city of Boston oberved a 79 percent decline in violent crime.
Brown’s initiatives also spawned countless urban collaborative efforts in the years that followed the Boston Ceasefire.
Brown is a consultant for municipalities and police departments on issues regarding youth violence and community relations.
He provides guidance and expert opinion to Fortune 25 corporations on Collaborative Leadership.
He has been the subject of a Harvard Business School case study regarding his efforts, and is an integral part of three other studies from the Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
Brown earned numerous local and national awards and citations.
Brown is the author of a book based on his experiences, titled “The Courage To Listen,” and has partnered with Paramount Pictures on a feature film based on his experiences.
He pastored the Union Baptist Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts for 22 years, has lectured all over the country, and is known for his fiery and inspiring messages.
Brown is described as a national expert, a gang mediator, a preacher, a pastor, and an author.
He will likely give an inspiring message to the graduating class of 2018, since motivation and alliance building is something he is widely known for.
